Yonder Hill Launch new Y-Range Label

The dream of Frikkie Naudé, owner of Yonder Hill Wines, to create a top quality range of wines at an affordable price realised in 2004 when the first Yonder Hill Y-range wines were bottled. Now, 12 years down the line, it is time for a revamp.

The Naudé family has been farming on Yonder Hill since 1993 and their strong family values have been a great part of their continued success. The new label symbolises growth and companionship – growth of the vine and finding joy in the company of friends and family.

Symbolism of the new label
The graphic designers, Haumann Small Design Studio in Stellenbosch are the artists behind the new look. “The ‘Y’ represents a vine; the free style of the illustration gives a natural feel of a handcrafted product while the branching symbolises the diversity of the trademark.”

They also included elements from the Naudé family crest in the background to represent a vineyard landscape. The Naudé family crest was inserted at the bottom of the label and acknowledges the family behind the trademark and also adds value to the product.

Y-Merlot 2016
Merlot grapes from the Paarl and Stellenbosch regions are used to create the Y-Merlot and this selection ensures an ideal combination of fresh fruity flavours and easy drinkability.

The grapes ripen mid season and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with regular cross-pumping to extract maximum colour from the skins. The wine is juicy with aromas of mulberry and strawberry with no harsh tannins while the palet is soft and elegant.

Y-Sauvignon Blanc 2016
This wine is made from a specially selected vineyard in Stellenbosch. The vines are 18 years old and the canopy was opened to produce more thiols (tropical flavours) and less pyrazines (grass flavours). When thiols increase, the wine has more prominent tropical flavours, while a decrease in pyrazines lessens the green grass aromas. The wine is made in a reductive style to retain the fresh, fruity flavours of the grapes.

It is an easy drinking wine with aromas of tropical fruit flavours like gooseberries, litchis and guava. The palet is balanced with a full fruity taste and a fine crisp finish.

With the Y-Merlot and Y-Sauvignon Blanc costing only R50 per bottle, you have to ask yourself, Y not?

Daniel Naude - Animal Farm

DANIEL NAUDÉ

ANIMAL FARM

Daniel Naudé’s first monograph is a collection of 50 of his portraits of animals, taken between 2007 and 2011. In an introductory essay, Naudé describes his initial encounter with an Africanis dog, in the desert plans of the Karoo, and the many road trips that followed in his photographic pursuit of these and other animals, their place in the South African landscape and their relationship to the humans that populate it. Martin Barnes, senior curator of photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, contributes an essay, observing that each of Naudé’s photographs ‘is a shared moment in time, one in which the animal and the human seem at once named and yet nameless, specific and yet universal. There is a mutual “now-ness” to this collection of arresting human-animal gazes, mediated by the camera. In total, they read like a remarkable series of ecstatic, intensified meeting points in which we query what it means to be alive, locked in momentary register with another sentient being.’

NEW WINEMAKER GETS STAMP OF APPROVAL FOR NEW VINTAGES

Experienced winemaker Abé Beukes, who took over the winemaking reins at Helderberg winery Yonder Hill in January this year, hasn’t been resting on his considerable laurels for the past ten months. With four new wines just released or close to release date, he invited a group of media and experienced tasters to share an intimate preview of bottled and barrel cellar wines with him.

The highest rated wine amongst the flight of four, was the 2012 Yonder Hill Merlot (R145 per bottle) which shows the Helderberg region can produce a quality version of this cool climate varietal from a tiny older vineyard set against the slopes of the impressive mountain overlooking the cellar building.

Abé commented that he wants the Yonder Hill terroir to shine through in all his wines, and this one in particular as it is one of the wines which made the farm famous. Taster Johann Crafford said it’s “a drinking wine and a thinking wine”, high praise indeed from a wine professional.

The Bordeaux style Yonder Hill Inanda 2013 (R85 per bottle) once again features the great red varietals Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a dollop of Merlot and Petit Verdot to give it that smooth finish, so beloved of this wine.

The 2014 Y Sauvignon Blanc shows its origins from Durbanville and Darling and will once again satisfy its many fans with tropical and some greener flavours, without excessive acidity. The tasting group felt that the Y Merlot 2014 could age happily for a few more years, but is already drinkable due to the ripe fruit on the palate. At the value-for-money price point of R40 per bottle, consumers can’t go wrong.

TASTING REPORT – 9 OCTOBER 2014

Y Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Clean & fruity with fresh acidity but not too racy. Shows tropical fruit like granadilla & pineapple, but also greener flavours from the Durbanville grapes used like asparagus, canned peas and green pepper. “Summer in a glass” commented one of the panel.

Y Merlot 2014
Lots of mocha and cedar on the nose with red fruit like strawberry and mulberries to balance the wood elements. Soft and smooth but with firm tannins and will still age well for a few years. A lot of back bone for a value-for-money wine. Drink and enjoy.

Yonder Hill Inanda 2013
Juicy red fruit and ripe dark fruit with some dark chocolate on the nose makes for a full-bodied, well-balanced wine. Easy-drinking with ripe firm tannins. Should age for a few more years, but will probably be finished long before it reaches optimum drinkability.

Yonder Hill Merlot 2012
A serious and well-received wine with comments about its rounded, smooth mouthfeel whilst still featuring a strong tannin structure. A lingering finish makes this a wine to keep and taste over time.
